Shub-Niggurath woodblock print
30 September 2008, posted by TuluA fantastic medieval woodblock print of Shub-Niggurath, by Lovecraftian:

“Iä! Shub-Niggurath! The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young!”
– The Whisperer in Darkness (1930), H.P. LovecraftThis woodblock print is my imagining of a page taken from a medieval copy of the infamous “Necronomicon.” This is the first of a series, which I intend to continue next with an illustration of Dagon.
Shub-Niggurath, though mentioned only a few times in Lovecraft’s writings, stands out as a rare female deity in his mythos. Based on the quote above, she must be very busy indeed. I’ve depicted her as a dark mother goddess, suckling one blasphemous horror whilst releasing another into the nether.
Signed and numbered edition of 50.
9 by 12 inch block on 11 x 14 inch cream Rives BFK paper.
Printed on a Takach etching press using oil-based black ink.
